For a family considering one phone as a connection for other devices, check the plan’s hotspot terms. Apple says the hotspot-providing iPhone or cellular iPad needs an activated carrier plan that includes Personal Hotspot service, and the number of devices able to join depends on the carrier and device model.

A hotspot allowance can differ from a plan’s handset-data description. Sakura Mobile publishes separate, plan-length-specific hotspot allowances for its unlimited eSIM. Its pocket Wi-Fi is another portable, shareable format to compare with per-phone eSIM plans.

Ubigi: fixed data with documented sharing

Ubigi lists a one-time Japan 10GB plan valid for 30 days at US$16.50. It states that data sharing is allowed and that users can top up after the allowance is consumed. Ubigi also says Smartstart activates the plan upon arrival, while unactivated plans expire after six months.

This may suit families seeking a stated data allowance. Ubigi defines a one-off plan as an allowance available once during a specified period, and says unused allowance does not roll over.

Saily: check the published speed qualification

Saily lists its featured unlimited Japan plan as 15 days at US$48.99. It states that the plan includes 5GB per day without speed limits, followed by unlimited data at up to 1Mbps. Saily also provides hotspot setup instructions for iOS and Android. Saily’s technical details list “Limitless hotspot sharing with friends and family.” They do not identify a dedicated hotspot limit, so shared data draws from the plan’s daily high-speed allowance. That differs from Holafly’s published 1GB-per-day tethering limit.

Saily states that an eSIM can be installed and activated within 30 days of purchase. It says a plan installed before travel starts automatically on arrival, and unused data expires when the validity period ends.

Holafly: unlimited handset data with a stated sharing limit

Holafly states that its Japan plans are data-only and do not include a telephone number for conventional calls or SMS. Its Japan page states that tethering is limited to 1GB per day, including a seven-day-plan example of 7GB total sharing.

Holafly says unlimited plans may be subject to network-provider fair-use policies. It also states that it does not guarantee network capacity, quality, or availability.

Why “unlimited” needs a closer look

Published qualifications vary. Sakura Mobile states that its 4G unlimited product has a 3GB-per-day high-speed fair-use policy, followed by a 200 Kbps speed limit. For its unlimited eSIM, Sakura Mobile lists hotspot allowances of 2GB for 1–3-day plans, 6GB for seven days, 13GB for 14 days, and 30GB for 27–31 days.

Ubigi lists its Japan unlimited 30-day plan with up to 60GB of full-speed data, followed by optimization to 2Mbps for the remainder of the plan. Holafly states that tethering on unlimited plans is not unlimited and that the destination-specific sharing allowance should be checked.

Setup checks before departure

Apple says travel eSIM use requires an iPhone XS/XR or later, an eSIM-supporting provider, and generally Wi-Fi or a hotspot for activation. Apple also says an iPhone must not be carrier-locked to use another carrier while travelling; Carrier Lock should show “No SIM Restrictions.”

Apple directs users to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data to choose the line that supplies travel data. Sakura Mobile says a stable internet connection is required to install its travel eSIM and warns that its QR code can be used only once.
